DIY: How To Check Your Tire Tread Wear

Checking Tire Tread_189773810

Tire tread depth is a common topic of conversation among Wallingford drivers who want to know “why” and “how” to inspect their tires for wear and damage. “How do I check the tire tread wear?” An incredibly simple method gauges the depth of your tire treads. But why is this so important? Simply put, the treads on your tires assist you in maintaining control of your car while you navigate Milford roads. As time passes, the quantity of tread on your tires will diminish, reducing the grip your vehicle has on the road. If your tire tread depth isn’t sufficient, you may find yourself in a dangerous position, particularly in wet weather when grip is extremely vital due to the slick roadways.

Do you find yourself asking, “How do I check tire tread wear?” If so, don’t worry; our service department at Hamden Chevrolet has you covered. You can easily schedule an appointment online. Your tire tread depth may be easily checked at home with just a ruler or a penny. Learn here how to examine the depth of your tire treads.

How to Check Tire Tread Depth

New tires normally have a tread depth of 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch (about a third of an inch). Tread grooves are often wider and deeper on winter tires, off-road tires, and some truck and SUV tires.

Where do you look for signs that it’s time to get new tires? When the tread depth is 2/32 of an inch or less, you should have new tires, as the U.S. Department of Transportation recommends. It is crucial to keep your tires at the correct tread depth when driving in %%target _city_3%%.

Using Your Pennies

Tire tread depth is best measured using a ruler, although a penny will do in a pinch. The shape of the United States penny makes it a simple and effective instrument for gauging tread depth on tires. Here’s how to measure the depth of your tire treads:

  • Start by placing Lincoln’s head-first on the penny and then sliding it into a tire tread groove.
  • Verify that the head of Abraham Lincoln is no longer visible between the groves by covering it with a coin.
  • To determine if your tire treads are worn down to 2/32 inches or less, look for the outline of President Lincoln’s head in the treads.
  • Fourth, do this to all four tires in several spots on each tire.

Alternative Ways to Check Tire Tread Depth

Here are several alternate ways to measure tread depth without a penny:

  •  A tread depth gauge is available at any car parts store in the North Haven area. To check the tread wear rating, push the gauge’s top bar flat against the tire and place the probe in the tread’s shallowest groove.
  • Most tires have tread wear indicator bars constructed into them; these bars may be seen at the base of the tread grooves at various spots across the tire. Once the bars have reached the same level as the surrounding tire ribs (2/32 of an inch), it is time to replace the tire.
