How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires

Mechanic with Tires

Regular tire maintenance can improve your car’s performance, including everything from safety to fuel economy, but what if you’re not sure when to rotate your tires? Most drivers in Wallingford and Milford should schedule a tire rotation around every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. However, determining when to rotate tires will depend on several factors. Hamden Chevrolet is here to walk you through the process and offer tips on when to plan your next tire maintenance service.

When to Rotate Tires: FWD and RWD Vehicles

Your drivetrain type helps determine how many miles to rotate tires, but front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles are on the same tire maintenance schedule. That’s because both drivetrain configurations receive power to only half of the wheels at a time. A FWD vehicle will send engine power to the front wheels, while a RWD vehicle sends the engine power to the rear wheels. While both share the same tire rotation interval, they have different tire rotation patterns:

  • Both front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles usually need tire rotations around 5,000 to 7,500 miles
  • For FWD models, the rear right tire will travel to the front left side as it goes through its rotation pattern. The rear left tire will travel to the front right. But when moving the front tires to the back, they remain on the same side.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, the process is the opposite of a FWD car. Switch sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.
  • If you regularly experience extreme driving conditions, like off-roading or racing, you’ll need to schedule your tire rotations earlier to account for the extra wear and tear. Ask our technicians for suggestions!

When to Rotate Tires: AWD Vehicles

While FWD and RWD vehicles send power to only half the wheels, all-wheel drive vehicles send power to all four wheels. This creates better stability and control, but it also affects the way your tires wear over time in North Haven. Most experts recommend scheduling your tire rotation around every 3,000 – 5,000 miles if you use AWD regularly. The tire rotation pattern also differs:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.

Why Rotate Tires?

Beyond knowing when to rotate tires, why rotate tires at all?m Tire rotations help to even out the wear and tear across your entire set. Otherwise, your front tires might run out of usable tread before the rear tires ready for a replacement. Not only will you save money on replacements if you stick with proper tire maintenance, but you’ll also enjoy driving benefits like:

  • Greater traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Less stress on the drivetrain
